A Tree Network Topology
is basically a combination of bus and
star topology i.e. tree topology merge
the characteristics of bus and star topology. As we have read about a bus topology
in "Bus Topology in Computer Network”;
a bus topology connects all computers in a network through a common communication
medium having terminators at both of its ends. These terminators absorb signals.
Whereas on the other hand; a star network topology connects all computers with a central hub for sharing information
and other useful resources. For more information about star topology read "What is a Star Network Topology?”.
Generally, a tree network topology is used when an extended and
large computer network is needed to establish. This is because tree topology can
connect large number of computers over a computer network.
Working of Tree Topology
Tree topology is composed of various groups of computers which
are attached in star topology. There could be three, four or even more groups of
computers in a tree network topology. Each group might be further consisted of four
to five or more computers connected in a star topology. All these groups are connected
to a backbone cable known as bus.
Advantages of tree topology
Tree topology is very beneficial when it comes to expand the
existing computer networks. Here we have described a few advantages of tree topology.
- Wiring for segments
One of the main advantages
of tree topology is the wiring of segments. It provides point to point wiring
for individual segments.
- Hardware and software
vendor support
Tree topology is supported by various hardware and software vendors.
Thus tree topology becomes more advantageous and users prefer to install such useful
network topologies.
Disadvantages of tree topology
- Failure of network
Network with Tree topology would break down entirely if the
backbone cable is broken down. Thus it is considerable to make sure that the backbone
cable is reliable before the establishment of network.
- Difficult to establish
network
Due to several computer connections i.e. the group computers
with star topology and all groups further with a bus cable, it is more difficult
to configure and wire a tree topology than other topologies.
